1. What is Antonio Salveta's background

Tony was sent to kickboxing classes at the tender age of seven by two fretful parents concerned by his hyperactivity. He changed martial arts more often than Premiership Football teams change their strip until finally settling on studying Ju-Jitsu under Renshi Tom Hodgins and Sensei Peter Sheeran in the NUIM Self Defence and Drogheda Ju-Jitsu clubs, respectively, in 1999.

In addition to teaching the club he inherited from Renshi Hodgins in Maynooth, Tony continues to train regularly under Sensei Stephen Downes and Professor Jonathan McGeoghan. Tony graded for Black Belt (Jiu-Jitsu International) under Renshi Tom Hodgins, Professor Jonathan McGeoghan, and Sensei Stephen Downes, passing the grading with flying colours and impressing all present.

2. What's Darryl Murray's Background?

Mr Darryl Murray began his training in the art of Kenpo Karate at the age of 6 in 1989 at The Loreto College Kenpo Karate School. He achieved the rank of Black Belt in December 2000 under the American Kenpo International Senior Council - President Tony Cogliandro, President of the Board of Directors Don Rodrigues, European Senior Council Directors Maurice Mahon, Shay Paget and Barney Coleman. The distinguished panel also consisted of AKI Senior Council members Mr. Alan Corrigan, Mr. Dermot O'Reilly, Ms Freda Roberts and Mr. Philip Curran.

He first competed internationally in Amsterdam in 1997 and at the time he was one of the youngest members on the team. From this experience he gained a greater understanding of how much could be achieved by hard work and training. As well as competing in Holland he has also competed at other tournaments abroad such as Jersey 1998, Plymouth 2000, and Boston 2003. Mr Murray is also a long standing member of The Loreto College Kenpo Karate Demonstration team.

While studying at NUI Maynooth he began cross-training with practitioners from other systems including Jiu-jitsu, Judo and other styles of Karate. From this he has developed a long standing relationship with the instructors and students of the Self Defence Club. He has also attended seminars with renowned martial artists such as Mr Alan Jacobs, Mr Larry Tatum, Mr Paul Dye, Mr Huk Planas and Mr Tony Cogliandro to name a few.

While in Holland in 2006 Mr. Murray was awarded the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt. At Present he currently teaches and trains most nights in the week, and is proud to have begun teaching Kenpo in Maynooth.

3. What if I don't have any experience?

That's fine, our personal protection courses are geared towards beginners. They teach practical personal protection, using techniques that anyone (no matter what size, sex, or fitness level) can perform. Even if you've never done any form of martial arts, self defence, or personal protection course before, you'll be welcome in our classes.

4. What do I wear?

Just wear something that's comfortable to move in - we recommmend tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt.

Participants in the Level 2 (and above) Personal Protection Course may also be interested in purchasing a martial arts suit (for greater comfort) - the club organises purchasing of suits, with big discounts for students and club members.

5. How much does it cost?

Club membership is 2 Euro per annum.

Additional martial arts classes will be charged on a per class basis (2 Euro per class) with prepay rates available (5 Euro per week, etc). If you would like to participate in any of the classes we offer, we'd be delighted to have you along. Just ask one of the instructors, and we'll fill you in on the times and on what's available for you.

6. What if I'd like to train in Jiu Jitsu or Kenpo?

Jiu Jitsu and Kenpo classes run regularly (see timetable). Club membership and training fees entitle a student to attend as many classes as the club runs, regardless of class type (Personal Protection, Jiu Jitsu, Kenpo, Weapons, etc.).

Students wishing to grade or travel to seminars with the club will require a budo pass (martial arts licence) at a cost of 15 Euro per year.

7. How do I get to the club?

For detailed maps and directions, please see our location page.

If you have a question that's not answered on that page, please send us an email, and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

8. Who are you affiliated with?

Jiu Jitsu International
Jiu Jitsu International was started in 1984 as a non political organisation to promote the highest standards of Jiu Jitsu, both physically and mentally, throughout the world. Now established in more than 30 countries, it functions as an open learning platform to share and advance knowledge and expertise in both modern and traditional aspects of the Art. Jiu Jitsu International organises national and international events, training camps and the exchange of teachers between affiliated clubs and organisations, all of which are bonded by a commom commitment to serve the traditions of honour, selflessness and contribution to the development of the Art of Jiu Jitsu and of the wellbeing of others. NUIM Self Defence club's affiliation with Jiu Jitsu International started with Renshi Hodgins, and has continued through with Antonio Salveta and Mark Whale.
American Kenpo International
American Kenpo International is an organization headed by Master Professor Tony Cogliandro. Its main objective is to preserve and analyze the "original/traditional" version of Grand Master Ed Parker's American Kenpo Karate and continue the legitimate lines of rank and heritage Mr. Parker has left us. We recognize that we are only as strong as our members, therefore, AKI is committed to continual growth through training and advancement of our knowledge as a group.
NUIM Self Defence club's affiliation with American Kenpo International is primarily through Darryl Murray.
